Bundesliga Profile: Bayer Leverkusen Still Fighting 'Neverkusen' Label

For a moment, time stood still. In that moment, history was made and one of the game’s greats etched an indelible mark in football’s historical core. Having looped the ball high into the air, Roberto Carlos, in this side just another galactico, stood, watched and waited, just like the rest of us. As the ball rose and then fell through the darkness, the sensation that time had momentarily stood still was shared by thousands. And then, as if Zinedine Zidane was the only person in the ground still ticking, one acrobatic sweep of his left leg won the Champions League for Real Madrid. Hampden Park, Glasgow had just bore witness to one of the most staggering and at the same time simply transfixing moments of footballing history. Yet at the same time it had also provided the setting for the nadir of Bayer Leverkusen’s surge up the footballing ranks. It was the goal to beat all goals, yet the one that ultimately saw the end of an era for Leverkusen.

Bundesliga Review: Bayer Leverkusen Snatch Late Winner Against Bremen

It was a long time coming, though in the end Bayer came out of the dark, gloomy and graffiti ridden tunnel that was Sunday’s encounter with Bremen to the light at the end. After 85 minutes of misplaced passes, frustrated tackles from frustrated players and a real shortage of quality, left-back Michael Kadlec broke the deadest of deadlocks. Though two minutes later two spurned chances from Bayer brought us all back down to earth and summed up a tedious encounter at the BayArena.

A new season and, they had hoped, a new dawn for the darlings of the Bundesliga. As Bayern Munich’s new manager Jupp Heynckes, fresh from finishing second place with Bayer Leverkusen last season, lapped up his new admirers’ adoration and signed autographs prior to kick off, optimism engulfed the Allianz Arena. Then Manuel Neur, Munich’s marquee €22m signing from rivals Schalke in the offseason, gladly received his award for the 2010-2011 player of the Bundesliga and instantly optimism changed places for expectation. After last season’s trophyless ignominy, continuing Munich’s recent curse of underachievement in years ending in odd digits, fresh faces and a bolstered defensive unit had begun to instill a renewed belief and expectancy amongst these hordes of pulsatingBavarians. Phillip Lahm stood proud in the centre circle, dressed in Bayern’s new Burgundy and Gold and, donned with the Captain armband, prepared to begin the fight to put them back where they belong- the fulcrum of German football. The sun beating down off the emerald green playing surface created the perfect setting for a new beginning. Yet what ensued in the following 90 minutes strayed miles from the script.

Schwarz Und Gelb: Dortmund's Best Performance Since 1995-96

With only eight games remaining and a nine point lead on second place Mainz, Borussia Dortmund are banging on the door of their fourth Bundesliga title. If they manage to hold out this will be their first title since their back-to-back campaigns in the 94-94 and 95-96 seasons. Can they do it again next year?

Two weeks ago at the Allianz-Arena in Munich, Raul scored the only goal as visitors Schalke knocked out defending German cup Champions Bayern Munich to seal a place in the DFB-Pokal final.

Last week at the Veltins-Arena in Gelsenkircken, a Jefferson Farfan double, the latter a dink in the 90th minute, gave Schalke a 3-1 win over Valencia as the hosts secured a position in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Champions league.

Yet, Schalke’s best fortnight of the season was not enough to save its manager’s job, as the club announced, with immediate effect, the sacking of Felix Magath.
