Bottom club Chesterfield picked up a much needed win in their fight for survival in league one after a 2-1 away win at Colchester. This was Chesterfield first win since September 17 and their first win in seventeen games.  It was relief all around for manager John Sheridan team who have found it tough in League one after their promotion from League two last season.

It started very well for the visiting team as Huddersfield loanee Liam Ridehalgh crossed in from the right hand side to find veteran striker Jack Lester to head home after six minutes. Colchester nearly equalised straight away but Anthony Wordsworth cross was just too high for the on rushing Carl Duguid who could connect with the cross. Poor Colchester defending let in David Davis who is on loan at Chesterfield from Wolves ran at goal but his shot was well saved by Ben Williams in the Colchester goal.

Colchester got the equaliser just after the half hour and it was Steven Gillespie who drove home from just outside the area to level the scoreline. Colchester nearly took the lead moments later when good play on the right where the ball fell to Ian Henderson but his effort was just inches wide of the post. Moments before the halftime whistle Chesterfield re-took the lead and once again Liam Ridehalgh can claim the assist. His free kick from the right hand side found Josh Thompson who headed home.

In the second half the home side was putting pressure of the away side and Gavin Massey tried his luck from distance but his effort was well saved by Tommy Lee. Steven Gillespie then wasted another chance for the homes side as they were piling on the pressure, the striker volleyed over in the eighteen-yard box.

With time running down there was one last chance for the home side and Gavin Massey broke from deep and played a through ball to Ian Henderson but his left footed effort was wild and went high and wide of the visitor’s goal.

The away side picked up a much needed victory, their first win in seventeen league games. With Rochdale’s latest defeat away at Wycombe, Chesterfield cut the deficit to one point. Also with this win Chesterfield are now five points of safety, even though the club are rock bottom of league one this a crucial win for the club in this crucial part of the season.
