Clint Dempsey makes history with Fulham plus everything else you need to know about Americans playing outside the US


ENGLAND

Clint Dempsey became the first American to score a hat trick in the Premiership on Saturday, netting three goals in the Cottagers’ 5-2 victory over Newcastle United. Dempsey takes on fellow Americans Tim Howard and Landon Donovan on Friday in an FA Cup matchup between Everton and Fulham.

Landon Donovan helped Everton to a 1-1 draw against Blackburn on Saturday. Tim Howard made three saves in the game.

Tim Ream was granted his work permit this Monday and is set to transfer to Bolton Wanderers. Ream will be joining fellow American Stuart Holden at Bolton.

Robbie Rogers is also making the move to England after his work permit was approved last week. Rogers' move to Leeds United will be completed once he receives his visa and international clearance. Rogers received a special dispensation because he has not played the required number of international games to receive a work permit.

Brad Friedel and Tottenham Hotspur fell to Manchester City in a 3-2 defeat. Friedel made one save in the match. Spurs will take on Watford on Friday in an FA Cup match.

Brad Guzan was once again on the bench this week during Aston Villa’s 3-2 win over Wolverhampton Wanderers. Guzan will be out of contract in the summer which will most likely have him looking for a new team.

Jonathan Spector played 90 minutes in Birmingham City’s 3-0 victory over Watford. Birmingham travel to Sheffield United on Saturday.

Zak Whitbread played 90 minutes in Norwich City’s scoreless draw vs. Chelsea. Norwich are currently in 9th place. Whitbread and Norwich face West Bromwich Albion in an FA Cup matchup.

ITALY

Michael Bradley played the full 90 minutes and picked up a yellow card in Chievo Verona’s 2-2 draw vs. Lecce. The Flying Donkeys host Lazio next weekend. 

SCOTLAND

Maurice Edu scored the equalizer for Rangers in their 1-1 draw against Aberdeen. Carlos Bocanegra picked up a yellow card in the match while Bedoya was once again on the bench. Rangers host Hibernian next weekend.

GERMANY

Steve Cherundolo faced fellow Americans Fabian Johnson and Danny Williams in Hannover 96’s scoreless draw against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. Both Cherundolo and Williams went 90 minutes while Johnson played the final 24 minutes of the match. Cherundolo and Hannover take on Timmy Chandler and Nurnberg on Friday. Hoffenheim travel to Dortmund on Saturday.

Timmy Chandler is currently serving a two-game suspension for a red card and did not play in Nurnberg’s 2-0 victory over Hertha Berlin.  

BELGIUM

Sacha Kljestan and RSC Anderlecht continued on their winning streak with a 1-0 victory over Kortrijk on Saturday. Next Saturday Kljestan and his team face Beerschot.

NETHERLANDS

Jozy Altidore played the final 17 minutes of AZ Alkmaar’s 1-1 draw against Ajax. Alkmaar travel to Roda JC on Saturday.

MEXICO

Jose Torres picked up a yellow card in Pachuca’s 1-1 draw to Cruz Azul. Torres and his team take on Querétaro next weekend.

DaMarcus Beasley went 90 minutes in Puebla’s 2-1 defeat to Atlante. Next Saturday the team faces Jaguares.

Herculez Gomez played the final 17 minutes in Santos Laguna’s 1-0 win over Jaguares on Saturday. Santos Laguna face a matchup with Tijuana on Sunday.

Edgar Castillo played 54 minutes in Tijuana’s 2-0 victory over Chivas de Guadalajara.

Michael Orozco went 90 minutes in his team’s 2-0 loss to Morelia on Friday. On Sunday, San Luis play Club America.
